Probably one of the great science fiction films of The Golden Age is William Cameron Menzies' "Things To Come," written by H.G. Wells.

Made in 1936, "Things To Come" tells a 100-year story about a great world war that leaves the planet in ruins and how a group of scientists calling themselves Wings Over The World leads Earth into a new age.

Bale, 34, faces questioning over the claim â made by his own mother and sister.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: âA 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment.

âHe was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault. He currently remains in custody.â

Bale was arrested just hours after he attended the first European screening of the new Batman blockbuster, The Dark Knight.

But he was able to attend the first European screening of new Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight in Londonâs West End.

He is alleged to have lashed out on Sunday night at Park Laneâs Dorchester Hotel â where he has a suite.

Mum Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, who lives in Dorset, went to a police station in Hampshire yesterday to lodge the allegation. The matter was referred to the Met Police.

Detectives, well aware of last nightâs glittering bash, took the decision not to approach Bale yesterday. But they were expected to make attempts to quiz the Wales-born actor today.

At E3 this week, Nintendo announced Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Wii -- supposedly due out November 16th or thereabouts.

One of the features in this new game is the ability to transfer your character and accumulated items from your DS to the Wii.

The latest report on the box office for Dark Knight have the film grossing $66.4 million on Friday, that's including the $18.5 million it took in on midnight/3 a.m. screenings (which beats the $16.9 million record set by Revenge of the Sith).

Dark Knight is expected to take in well over $100 million this weekend. The question is, how much over 100 and will the film set a new record for biggest 3-day opening?

The record to beat is Spider-Man 3, which bagged $151 million its opening weekend.

As you can see, virtually every one of us at the GD Labs lowballed our prediction, making TheQuarterMexican the winner:

TheQuarterMexican: $120
SnarfJizzle: $69 million
FuzzyDave: $62 million
Elly: $63.74 million

We'll keep updating as new figures roll in.

Saturday Update:

Unofficial Saturday estimate: $48 million

That puts the total to 114.4, which means DK needs to make $36.6 million to tie Spider-Man 3

There is water ice on Mars within reach of the Mars Phoenix Lander, NASA scientists announced Thursday.

Photographic evidence settles the debate over the nature of the white material seen in photographs sent back by the craft. As seen in lower left of this image, chunks of the ice sublimed (changed directly from solid to gas) over the course of four days, after the lander's digging exposed them.

"It must be ice," said the Phoenix Lander's lead investigator, Peter Smith. "These little clumps completely disappearing over the course of a few days, that is perfect evidence that it's ice."

The New York Times reported that Warner Brothers is planning three DVD releases connected with the March 2009 release of "The Watchmen."

The first DVD, "Tales of the Black Freighter," based on a subplot in the graphic novel, will be released 5 days after the theatrical release of "The Watchmen."

The second DVD release will come a few months later with the release of the theatrical film's disc.

The third DVD will be the two films spliced together to make one huge mega-movie.

The Mars Phoenix probe touched down on the Northern Polar surface of Mars a few hours ago.

The probe (heh. probe) has a Twitter account and you can get up-to-the-minute updates and photos as NASA's search for water -- and possible life -- on Mars progresses. --FuzzyDave

• Both films (The Hobbit and the LOTR "prequel") will be shot back-to-back in 2010, with the first arriving December, 2011 and the second in December, 2012. As far as rating goes, they're shooting for "an intense PG-13."
• They will not begin casting until the scripts are written, but said Ian McKellan will "absolutely" return as Gandalf and Ron Perlman will return; most likely not as the voice of Smaug.
• Howard Shore will score the films.
• They're currently working on a Blu-ray version of all three Lord of the Rings films, but it won't be out this year.
